Sometimes it’s easy to forget that millions of families face the challenges of hunger every day, even in our own communities. In the state of New Jersey over 1.2 million residents are food insecure—and over half of these individuals do not qualify for any kind of government assistance. As a result, many of these individuals rely on relief organizations like the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, which distributed 44 million pounds of food in 2014. This year, demand is expected to rise, especially over the next few months during the traditionally busy holiday season.

The Hillside, NJ-based relief organization recently deployed Voxware’s Cloud-based VMS in both of its facilities to process food more quickly and better meet the needs of its clientele. The four-star rated charity serves 18 of New Jersey’s 21 counties and employs dozens of item selectors.

One of the ways to serve more hungry families is to increase the speed at which food is processed. Since employees at the New Jersey Community FoodBank are cross-trained to perform multiple tasks throughout the warehouse, shorter picking shifts means that more time can be devoted to other functions throughout the warehouse. As a result of the Voxware deployment, picking shifts have been reduced by 30%.

The organization’s item selectors reported that the software was easy to train, easy to use and they are looking forward to leveraging voice during the busy season.

Consider helping the Community FoodBank serve even more hungry families by making a donation of funds or food, or by volunteering at a facility near you. There are many ways to get involved, all listed on the Community FoodBank’s website.
